TED talks are "a clearinghouse that offers free knowledge and inspiration from the world's most inspired thinkers, and also a community of curious souls to engage with ideas and each other." TED talks are hosted and sponsored by the not-for-profit group TED, whose goal is to create and promote a world-wide community of innovators, "thinkers, and doers."

The talks are given by a diverse body of doctors, educators, artists, musicians, writers, etc. who represent vast and varied micro-cultures: men, women, gay, straight, transgender, Asian, Caucasian, African American, introverts/extroverts, christian, muslim...the list is infinite. My name is Jennifer Weitman. I am a current graduate student in Seattle University's MIT program. I am an avid reader and writer. I hope to continue to work on personal projects while maintaining a professional career as a high school English teacher. As a writer, I am dedicated to the written word and the creative process. Currently, I am working with my creative partner (contemporary street artist Karl Addison) on our third book. He resides in Berlin and I have traveled to work with him twice in the last two years. Being immersed in Germany’s street culture (i.e. graffiti, art, music) has opened my world view and I hope that my passion for international urban culture and enthusiasm for writing and the collaborative process will integrate nicely into the class room, particularly grades 9-12.
Below are links to three online resources (tech tools) that I find particularly useful in my personal and professional work. Enjoy!

TED talks are 18 minutes or less and are on a wide ranging spectrum of ideas. They are engaging and a perfect source of quick, informed, and entertaining education for high school students. I hope to use TED talks to inform class discussion(s). Below is a TED talk I will use in my unit on music and narrative forms. There is also a Q & A article related to the video.

Tech Tool #2: www.poets.org
The Academy of American Poets was founded in 1934. It's purpose is to highlight and support American contemporary poets. The Academy accomplishes this by: hosting National Poetry Month "the largest literary celebration in the world," housing an audio archive of 700+ recordings from the 1960's until present, and providing free online resources for high school teachers including lesson plans.
I will utilize this resource on its own and in conjunction with other online tools, like KEXP for example. The Academy has a unit called "Voice" which explores narrative poetry, beginning with the use of rap lyrics and spoken word poetry. This lesson would compliment the hip-hop lessons from KEXP nicely and would add a bit more depth to a unit on music and narratives.
