Tech Tool #2: www.poets.org
The Academy of American Poets was founded in 1934. It's purpose is to highlight and support American contemporary poets. The Academy accomplishes this by: hosting National Poetry Month "the largest literary celebration in the world," housing an audio archive of 700+ recordings from the 1960's until present, and providing free online resources for high school teachers including lesson plans.
I will utilize this resource on its own and in conjunction with other online tools, like KEXP for example. The Academy has a unit called "Voice" which explores narrative poetry, beginning with the use of rap lyrics and spoken word poetry. This lesson would compliment the hip-hop lessons from KEXP nicely and would add a bit more depth to a unit on music and narratives.
