Tech Tool #3 (Diversity Resource): http://www.ted.com/talks
TED talks are "a clearinghouse that offers free knowledge and inspiration from the world's most inspired thinkers, and also a community of curious souls to engage with ideas and each other." TED talks are hosted and sponsored by the not-for-profit group TED, whose goal is to create and promote a world-wide community of innovators, "thinkers, and doers."
TED talks are 18 minutes or less, covering a wide ranging spectrum of ideas. They are engaging and a perfect source of quick, informed, and entertaining education for high school students. The talks are given by a diverse body of doctors, educators, artists, musicians, writers, etc. who represent vast and varied micro-cultures: men, women, gay, straight, transgender, Asian, Caucasian, African American, introverts/extroverts, christian, muslim...the list is infinite. I hope to use TED talks to inform class discussion(s). I also hope that by using these talks, students gain insights into their own micro-cultures and how they relate to the international community. Below is a TED talk I will use in my unit on music and narrative forms. There is also a Q & A article related to the video.
