Tech Tool #1: KEXP Lesson Plans

KEXP Lesson Plans are designed for grades 6-12. The lessons incorporate a variety of subjects including language arts, cultural studies, social studies, music, and visual arts. The lesson plans are part of the not-for-profit radio station's documentary series, which highlights a vast array of musical talents and genres "in the time it takes to play just one song." The documentary series and the lesson plans are available at no-cost and there is no registration required.
The lesson plans I am interested in utilizing in my future classroom are designed around hip-hop culture. There are three lesson plans: What is hip-hop?, Hip-Hop Identity, & Place, and The Art of Turntablism. All three plans use hip-hop culture to: discuss personal and social identity, make socio-economic and geographical connections, and illustrate different modes of communication through the four elements of hip-hop (MCing, DJing, graffiti, and break dancing). One of the learning objectives for Hip-hop, Identity, & Place is to "connect hip-hop lyrics with their assignment to write a personal narrative about place and identity." This lesson, in particular, will be of great use and importance in my unit on narrative forms (i.e short stories, longer forms, and poetry).
